Fake WhatsApp On Google Play Store Downloaded By Over 1 Million Android Users

Cybercriminals are known to take advantage of everything that's popular among people in order to spread malware, and Google's official Play Store has always proved no less than an excellent place for hackers to get their job done. Yesterday some users spotted a fake version of the most popular WhatsApp messaging app for Android on the official Google Play Store that has already tricked more than one million users into downloading it. Dubbed Update WhatsApp Messenger, came from an app developer who pretended to be the actual WhatsApp service with the developer title "WhatsApp Inc."—the same title the actual WhatsApp messenger uses on Google Play. You might be wondering how the sneaky app developer was able to use the same title as the legitimate Facebook-owned maker of the messaging client—thanks to a Unicode character space. The app maker added a Unicode character space after the actual WhatsApp Inc. name, which in computer code reads WhatsApp+Inc%C2%A0. However, this hidden character space at the end of the WhatsApp Inc. would be easily invisible to an average Android user browsing Google Play Store, allowing this dodgy version of the app to masquerade as a product of WhatsApp Inc. In other words, the titles used by the fake app maker and real WhatsApp service are different but appeared same to a user. According to Redditors, who first spotted this fake app on Friday, the app was not a chat app; instead, it served Android users with advertisements to download other apps. "I've also installed the app and decompiled it," one Redditor said. "The app itself has minimal permissions (internet access) but it's basically an ad-loaded wrapper which has some code to download a second apk, also called 'whatsapp.apk.' The app also tries to hide by not having a title and having a blank icon." Google has now removed the fake WhatsApp Android app from its official Play Store, but this incident once again marked the tech giant's failure to spot the scam on its app platform—even for the program that had more than a million downloads. It is an unfortunate truth that even after so many efforts by Google (even recently launched Bug Bounty Program), malicious apps continuously somehow managed to fool its Play Store's security mechanism and infect millions of Android users. Google Play Store is still surrounded by hundreds of other fake and malicious apps that trick users into downloading and installing them and potentially infect their smartphones to carry out malicious things without their knowledge. So, users are advised to be more vigilant while downloading apps not only from the third-party app store but also from official Play Store in order to protect themselves.

Whatsapp Warning

UPDATE ONE - Monday 2pm GMT: A fake version of WhatsApp has been downloaded more than one million times from the Google Play Store. The news comes after Express.co.uk warned about another fake app that had appeared on the Android app store. But the latest breach is even more shocking. The 'Update WhatsApp Messenger' app appeared on the Google Play Store and looked like it had been developed by the real makers of WhatsApp. The Google Play Store page for the fake app claimed the programme had been developed by WhatsApp Inc. However, it was instead a fake app that contained adverts and download software onto a user's device. The app has been removed from the Google Play Store, as has the other fake app Express.co.uk alerted users about over the weekend. ORIGINAL - Sunday 9.45am GMT: WhatsApp fans have been told to avoid a fake version of that app that has been dubbed a “fraud app” and “data theft” programme. The bogus programme appears to be a fake version of the u

Vault 8: WikiLeaks Releases Source Code

Almost two months after releasing details of 23 different secret CIA hacking tool projects under Vault 7 series, Wikileaks today announced a new Vault 8 series that will reveal source codes and information about the backend infrastructure developed by the CIA hackers. Not just announcement, but the whistleblower organisation has also published its first batch of Vault 8 leak, releasing source code and development logs of Project Hive—a significant backend component the agency used to remotely control its malware covertly. In April this year, WikiLeaks disclosed a brief information about Project Hive, revealing that the project is an advanced command-and-control server (malware control system) that communicates with malware to send commands to execute specific tasks on the targets and receive exfiltrated information from the target machines. Hive is a multi-user all-in-one system that can be used by multiple CIA operators to remotely control multiple malware implants used in dif

World's Top Websites Record Your Every Keystroke

How many times it has happened to you when you look for something online and the next moment you find its advertisement on almost every other web page or social media site you visit? Web-tracking is not new. Most of the websites log its users' online activities, but a recent study from Princeton University has suggested that hundreds of sites record your every move online, including your searches, scrolling behavior, keystrokes and every movement. Researchers from Princeton University's Centre for Information Technology Policy (CITP) analyzed the Alexa top 50,000 websites in the world and found that 482 sites, many of which are high profile, are using a new web-tracking technique to track every move of their users. Dubbed "Session Replay," the technique is used even by most popular websites, including The Guardian, Reuters, Samsung, Al-Jazeera, VK, Adobe, Microsoft, and WordPress, to record every single movement a visitor does while navigating a web page, and this incredibly extensive data is then sent off to a third party for analysis. "Session replay scripts" are usually designed to gather data regarding user engagement that can be used by website developers to improve the end-user experience. More and more sites use "session replay" scripts. These scripts record your keystrokes, mouse movements, and scrolling behaviour, along with the entire contents of the pages you visit, and send them to third-party servers," Princeton researcher Steven Englehardt wrote in a blog post under the No Boundaries banner. "Collection of page content by third-party replay scripts may cause sensitive information such as medical conditions, credit card details and other personal information displayed on a page to leak to the third party as part of the recording. This may expose users to identity theft, online scams, and other unwanted behaviour." Most troubling part is that the information collected by session replay scripts cannot "reasonably be expected to be kept anonymous." Some of the companies that provide session replay software even allow website owners to explicitly link recordings to a user's real identity.

Goverment Banned

The judges suggested to the state DGP and Home Secretary that severe warning be issued to those who shared the 'dangerous' online game with others. MADURAI: Taking a serious view of the Blue Whale Challenge game, the Madras High Court today directed the Central and Tamil Nadu governments to explore possibilities of banning it. Initiating suo motu proceedings in the matter, Justices KK Sasidharan and GR Swaminathan of Madurai bench issued notice to the Union Information and Broadcasting Secretary and state Home Secretary and IT department and made several suggestions. The bench asked them to find out the possibility of banning the game and directed that IIT-Madras Director be impleaded in the case to offer suggestions to ban such online games. During the hearing of the matter, the state government informed the court that the student who ended his life here had shared the game with 75 others. However, all of them had been prevented from playing it, the government counsel added. The judges suggested to the state DGP and Home Secretary that severe warning be issued to those who shared the 'dangerous' online game with others. On September 1, the court had said it would take up the case suo motu when Krishnamurthy, an advocate, made an appeal for a direction to the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry to ban such games. The advocate made the plea after 19-year old Vignesh, a private college student, allegedly committed suicide on August 30 here after playing the game. Vignesh had reportedly told his friends that he was "crazy" about the game and also told his parents that he was getting isolated due to his addiction for it. Later in a suicide note, he had said "The game was a devastating one... once you enter it, you would not be able to come out." The bench also said monitoring should be intensified to prevent further spread of the game through sharing. The court stressed on the need for creating awareness among students against playing such "dangerous" online games in educational institutions. To this, CB-CID police officials present at the court said they were keeping a close watch and taking steps to freeze the game. Warning had been issued against those sharing and downloading the "deadly" online game, they added. The state government also informed the court that Vignesh had shared the game through Facebook and "Share it" App with 75 others. All had been prevented from playing the game, it said. The IT department should also give suggestions to prevent the sharing of such "dangerous" online games, the bench said and posted the matter for further hearing to September 7. The Blue Whale Challenge is reportedly a suicide game in which the player is given certain tasks to complete over a period of 50 days and the final task leads him or her to commit suicide. The player is also asked to share photos after finishing each challenge. The game has claimed several lives worldwide. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Blue Whale Game (Russian), also known as "Blue Whale Challenge", is a 21st-century social network phenomenon that is claimed to exist in several countries, beginning in 2016. The game reportedly consists of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators over a 50-day period, with the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide "Blue Whale" came to prominence in May 2016 through an article in a Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, that linked many unrelated child suicides to membership of group "F57" on the Russian-based VKontakte social network. A wave of moral panic swept Russia.[3] However the piece was later criticised for attempting to make a causal link where none existed, and none of the suicides was found to be as a result of the group activities.

Redmi Note 5 Leaks, Redmi 5A India Launch Date, Aircel vs. Jio, Black Friday Deals ..Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 launch seems imminent

Will Have Great Battery Life, Redmi 5A Expected In other Xiaomi news, the company is set to launch the 'Desh ka Smartphone' in India on November 30. The Redmi India Twitter account teased a smartphone with great battery life - pointing at either a large battery or optimised software in the form of MIUI 9. Speculation points to the Xiaomi Redmi 5A as the prime candidate for launch on November 30. The reasons are aplenty. First is the fact that the Redmi India handle was used to tweet, revealing it would be a Redmi-branded device. Secondly is its price - CNY 599 (roughly Rs. 5,800). A third reason for this is its battery life - Xiaomi says it will offer a battery life up to 8 days. It also runs MIUI 9 out-of-the-box. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has been leaked again. This time, an image via Weibo suggests the smartphone will run MIUI 9.7.9.26 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat, and be powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC. There's a 4000mAh battery and 12-megapixel rear camera too. Most notably, it is said to have a 5.99-inch display and is the first Redmi smartphone to have an 18:9 aspect ratio with a 1080x2160 pixels resolution. Some of the other rumoured specifications include a 5-megapixel front camera. There could be two variants of the phone at launch: 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. It is likely to support dual-SIM cards in a hybrid SIM slot configuration.

Facebook Crash how do I fix it?

If you are a Messenger person, it’s possible you may have recently experienced the app crashing. Facebook Messenger logo. Image: Facebook Facebook Messenger logo. Image: Facebook Specially occurring to Facebook Messenger users on iPhones and iPads, the app has reportedly been crashing a lot in the past two days for some users. This was first reported by The Verge, which revealed that the crash was happening because some users downloaded Messenger version 170.0, that was released on 15 June. The new version apparently has some bug that makes the app crash as soon as a user opens it. Many users reported the same issue. But how do I fix it? While the issue sounds complex, the fix for it is pretty straightforward. To counter the issue, Facebook released a version 170.1 of the Messenger soon after. Downloading the new version from the App Store is apparently fixing the app to an absolute normal. Facebook has also confirmed that the update will fix the issue. Now, you could wait for an auto-update to run, or

Avengers 4’s plot is similar to the TV show Lost, actor Evangeline Lilly said, leading fans to speculate whether multiple timelines, alternate realities and more versions of the same characters will be featured.

Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly in a recent interview compared the plot of Avengers 4 to the fourth season of Lost, the popular television series that she starred in. Season 4 of Lost was when the plot branched out and introduced the concepts of parallel timelines, flashbacks and flashforwards. “You want me to tell you about the flash-forwards and flashbacks and flash-sideways?” Lilly said, according to a report on Comicbook.com. “When I heard about Infinity War (and Avengers 4) and the direction that they’re heading, I did have this moment of realizing, oh, wow, there’s a bit of a déjà vu for me with the Lost franchise. We are hitting that (Lost) Season 4 space where everything’s about to shift, and you’re about to lose the solid ground underneath you. And (Ant-Man and the Wasp), of course, will play a part in that.” Lilly played Kate in six seasons of science fiction drama, Lost.

The Helpline Number for corona-virus : +91-11-23978046 or 1075

Government of India is taking all necessary steps to ensure that we are prepared well to face the challenge and threat posed by the growing pandemic of COVID 19 – the Corona Virus. With active support of the people of India, we have been able to contain the spread of the Virus in our country. The most important factor in preventing the spread of the Virus locally is to empower the citizens with the right information and taking precautions as per the advisories being issued by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

It’s still early days for Corona Kavach but the way the whole thing has been designed means it could be a hard sell in India.

The government of India’s Corona Kavach COVID-19 tracking app has been developed by the National e-Governance Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MHFW). Corona Kavach is different from MeitY’s COVID19 Feedback app. While the former has been designed to capture the outbreak, the latter collects feedback on any treatment undergone by individuals. Corona Kavach is only available for Android devices currently. MeitY notes that the app’s “beta version is still undergoing final testing before its official release.” You can download the app from the Google Play Store from the following link. The app explicitly requires two permissions, access to your location and files on your device. You can then register using your mobile number. The app sends a one time password (OTP) to the registered mobile number. More granular details like name, age and all, are never asked which means that you can basically browse through the app ‘anonymously’ or at least that’s the sort of impression Corona Kavach would give you. The homepage, which is the page you’re greeted with every time you open the app after some brief loading, is fairly simple and bare bones. And MeitY lets you know in advance that you’re dealing with beta software – which means that it’s not final and subject to change and hopefully improvements in due course of time. Below that ‘beta’ advisory, you get a list of ‘active COVID-19 cases,’ ‘cured/discharged cases,’ ‘death cases,’ and interestingly, also the number of ‘passengers screened at airport’ — this information is only and only for India. There are further links to a FAQ and Desk page – both of them don’t work at the time of writing this story. There is an ‘options’ menu which is also very basic at this point of time. There are only two headers here. While one takes you through a breathing exercise, the second one, the questionnaire, is the option you really signed in for. The questionnaire is what really drives the whole app – in fact, this is what can make or break the app. As opposed to most apps and websites tracking the novel coronavirus outbreak that use data fed in through an algorithm (which is frequently updated), Corona Kavach gives you that ‘control’ in your hands. Corona Kavach is not AI driven, but it’s driven by actual people – you and I. It’s a community effort. The questionnaire has six questions in all (for now) and you mostly get to answer in yes or no. Questions range from “are you facing any difficulty in breathing?” to “did you meet anyone who has recently traveled to any foreign country?” to “how much is your current body temperature?” You need to answer all the six questions honestly and submit – that’s how you become part of a database. As more and more people use the app and answer the questions, the database gets updated. Location access gives the app a rough idea of where you’re located. MeitY says your location data stays offline on your device (which is possibly why the app requires access to files on your device) at all times. It is only when you’re possibly exposed that you come online. Basis of the database, Corona Kavach then tags you into categories and colour-codes you. Code green means you’re all good, orange means you should see a doctor, yellow is for quarantine, and red means you’re infected. For the unexposed, Corona Kavach offers a one-hour location tracking window to keep a check on your surroundings to let you know if and when you come into contact with someone who’s already been infected by the virus. You can choose to conduct this tacking as many times as you want. It’s still early days for Corona Kavach but the way the whole thing has been designed means it could be a hard sell in India. For it to make any kind of difference, it would require volunteers in you and I to step up and let others know of your status. It’s only then that others would be able to benefit from it. Some would be fine with sharing that information, some may not. An app that tracks the symptoms of Covid-19 in the UK has become one of the most popular downloads. Its creators aim to deliver insights into why some people get the disease more severely than others. They also hope to create a map showing where outbreaks are happening and help distinguish cases from those of the common cold. It is one of many such new apps. Experts have warned people to be cautious about which they download. At present, Covid Symptom Tracker is the third most popular app in Apple's UK store and second in Google Play's new releases chart for the country. Its developers are targeting one million downloads in 24 hours.
